IAU Symposium 415 : Computational Horizons in Astrophysics - Bridging Theory, Data, and Discovery
Dates: August 10 - August 12, 2027
Venue: Rome, Italy
Organised by IAU Commission B1: Computational Astrophysics, IAUS415 takes place as part of the 33rd IAU General Assembly in Rome, Italy, 10-19 August 2027
Key Topics
- Exa-Scale High-Performance Computing for Astrophysical Simulations
- Data Infrastructure and Sharing
- Bridging Simulations and Observations
- Simulation Data for Future Observations
- AI and Machine Learning in Astronomy
Objectives
The landscape of astrophysics is undergoing a profound transformation, driven by the exponential growth of data and the emergence of powerful computational tools. As we enter the Exa-scale era, high-performance computing-especially GPU-accelerated simulations has become essential for cutting-edge simulations. On the observation side, current and future time-domain observations, as well as upcoming observatories such as Rubin, NGRST, SKA, CTAO, ELT, and EST, are poised to deliver unprecedented volumes of data. To fully exploit these resources, we must develop scalable data infrastructures, intelligent analysis pipelines, and simulation frameworks that can generate predictive models and mock catalogs. Machine learning and AI will be key in enhancing classification, anomaly detection, and real-time decision-making, enabling us to simulate new ensembles of mock catalogs and synthetic observations. This symposium will serve as a multidisciplinary forum bridging theorists, observers, and computer scientists for the grand challenges of modern astrophysics and the next generation of astronomical facilities.
